Sugarmill Woods Crime Watch (SMWCW) is sponsored by the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.  The mission and purpose is to provide a constant law enforcement presence in the community and to serve as the local eyes and ears of the Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Jeff Dawsy is actively involved with the Crime Watch teams throughout Citrus County. In the photo above, Sheriff Dawsy is seen addressing the members at the April 12, 2010 meeting and swore in the new officers of SMW Crime Watch.

The affairs of SMWCW are administered by the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Captain.  All are elected by the full membership on a biennial basis. These officers plus up to seven (7) squad leaders - one for each day of the week we patrol - serve as the executive board, which is the governing body of the organization. Current officers are:

  • President - Thomas Okimoto
  • Vice President - Ed Holbert
  • Secretary - Rosemary Kessinger
  • Treasurer - Richard KIeinsmith

The President and Captain oversee all day-to-day activities and they are the liaison with the Sheriff's Office. The squad leaders maintain weekly driver schedule assignments and keep their drivers aware of new developments and/or information. The Crime Watch vehicle, supplied and maintained by the Sheriff's Office, is operated daily.  Drivers work two (2) hour shifts on a day and time of their preference, if available.

Any resident of the SMW community (Cypress Village, Oak Village, and Southern Woods) and Citrus County, of good moral character and no serious criminal record, capable of performing the required duties, may become a member. Current membership totals over one-hundred (100).  Many members are of a seasonal nature; some drop out for health reasons making the search for new members an ongoing task.

A full membership meeting is held on the second Tuesday of every month, September through May, at 3:00 PM at the Homosassa Public Library.  These meetings feature interesting guest speakers and are open to the public. Volunteer drivers are always needed. If you are interested, please contact the President of SMW Crime Watch.
